Sports Chiropractic

Have you ever wondered what makes Tiger Woods, Lance Armstrong, Kaka and Michael Jordon the elite athletes they are? As well as being extremely talented individuals these group of athletes are all under chiropractic care on a regular basis!!

Consequently these stars of sport are rarely ever injured and maintain heavy schedules performing at the top level.

Ever since chiropractic began sports players from all abilities have used chiropractic to help with injuries and to aid recovery.

Many sports stars from around the world of sport are now taking advantage of the benefits of chiropractic care to allow them to play at their best and for more years.

The majority of sporting injuries seen are in joints such as the ankle, knee, wrist, elbow and shoulder as well as the back and neck.

These injuries are traditionally treated with non mechanical treatments such as massage, modalities as well as many other soft tissue techniques, however never have structural and mechanical work done even when at the core of the problem there is mechanical dysfunction and misalignment.

More recently ideas have changed and research has shown that muscle spasm or tightness in muscle tissue is the result of long term chronic irritation or pressure on the nerve tissue that supplies and controls the muscle. Muscle does not automatically or permanently shorten on its own after injury. Chronic or repetitive sporting muscle injuries result when the nerve and mechanical component are not also addressed in addition to the muscle itself.

Chiropractic treatment addresses all components of an injury allowing for a fast and long term recovery through manipulation, adjusting, rehabilitation exercise and proprioceptive work.

For example many lower extremity injuries such as knee and ankle pain can arise from misaligned pelvic joints. A misaligned pelvis changes the  biomechanical movement of the pelvic joints, hips, knees and ankles. This causes pain and malfunction and repetitive injury.

We not only recognise the importance of addressing the biomechanics of the spine and pelvis, but also make sure that the joints in the rest of the body are correctly aligned.

An example of this is when following a shoulder injury in a bad tackle, the joint becomes misaligned and affects its function as well as developing damage to he ligaments and muscle. Chiropractic care will not only treat the initial inflammation and pain resulting from the muscle and ligament sprain/strain but also very importantly realign the affected shoulder joint which allows for a much improved long term outcome.
